Did racism lead to George Floyd's death?

Image
The belief of self being superior than others have led to enormous human suffering in the world. This discrimination based on skin color or religion will not determine, who gets to live and who doesn't. This dystopian monkey is not yet off the back. "George Floyd", an African-American man died while getting detained by a white Minneapolis police officer "Derek Chauvin". Video footage show Derek Chauvin was leaning on George Floyd's neck with his knee. George Floyd was 46 years old. He was heard pleading, "I cannot breathe" and "Please don't kill me" with the police officer. He was unable to move even when he was asked to get in the car. He was later taken to hospital where he was declared dead. Floyd was stopped by police over some forgery accusation. This usually is implied for using fake bank notes or writing bad checks. This excessive, inhuman use of force has cost the life of the man who was supposed to be detained for questioning...

Why Trump and Social media platforms are at loggerheads?

Image
Trump is known for his inconvenience with the national and international news media organisations like CNN, Wall Street Journal, New York times etc. He has been calling them "Fake news factory" for some time. He prefers to communicate directly to his followers and is an avid Twitter user with massive following. So when Twitter started fact-checking his tweets, he lost his cool and threatened to sign executive orders against the social media platforms.  Trump is not somebody who plays it safe and it was very evident when Twitter chose to Fact-Check one of the president's tweet. Trump threatened the social media companies with an executive order threatening to narrow protections for social platforms that censor speech for ideological reasons. The war of words escalated when Twitter on Friday remarked on Donald trump's Minneapolis violence tweet as violating Twitter rules and glorifying violence, but choosing to keep the tweet in public's interest. This fact checking...

What if Hong Kong loses its special status?

Image
Value of something isn't more than it's perceived value. If a special status leads to significant benefits, it is certainly valuable and might be better off than lumped with the rest of Mainland. But with countries in a geopolitical warfare, this value needs to be cross analyzed with another value which is global dominance and influence. Seems there are no clear winners. United states considers Hong Kong a semi-autonomous part of China under it's United States-Hong Kong policy act of 1992. This semi-autonomous status means it is treated differently than mainland China in terms of Trade, Commerce, Finance, travel etc. Now, in case US revokes this special status and club Hong Kong with the rest of mainland China, that would effectively mean treating the global financial hub no differently than any other Chinese city. This policy rests on the mercy of the president of the united states of America, who has the power to suspend it with just an executive order which recently was ...

What is causing India-China standoff around LAC?

Image
India China relations have been complex over these years, where both haven't been really close to each other and yet haven't snubbed each other openly.  The India China border has been witnessing tensions over the past month, with incidents reported in at least four different locations along the line of actual control (LAC). Incidents at the Pangong lake in Ladakh on May 5, and at Naku La in Sikkim on May 9, had led to injuries, caused by "aggressive behavior on both sides". Stand offs at two other spots in Ladakh, in the Galwan valley and in Demchok, have reportedly escalated with a build up of troops by both sides.  The standoff in Galwan valley and Sikkim, is mainly triggered due to Indian forces increasing it's infrastructure at the Indian side of the LAC, within our territory. The Chinese troops came in to stop these construction activities, that the Indian army was undertaking. The territorial claims had been settle long since but India says that their Chine...

What is Belt & Road Initiative by China and why it's not just about the economy?

Image
The "Belt & Road" initiative is not just an economic or infrastructure development project. Deep within it's plan lies an ambition to shift the global center of power and influence from US to China. The "Belt & Road" initiative is a major infrastructure based geopolitical and economic development project that plans to link upwards of a hundred countries together by building roads, rails and water connections that goes as far as central Europe to Africa and links to major economic hubs in China. This initiative mostly centers around creating a physical trading infrastructure that did not exist earlier that could have made it conducive to trade at scale. World trade has been a blessing in disguise as far as China is concerned, it has exported it's way to prosperity after joining world trade organisation (WTO) in 2001. In many ways the "Belt & Road" is an extension of that. It's a way to increase trade through enhancing the phy...

What is 5G technology and why is it causing a Geopolitical nightmare?

Image
Based on number , 5G is the fifth generation mobile communication technology much like 1G, 2G, 3G and so on. On an interactive level, 5G networks are the next generation of mobile internet connectivity, offering faster speeds and more reliable connections on communication devices. Much like all new technologies, 5G is making a lot of hype. But is this hype justifiable? I mean we have all lived through all kinds of Gs such as 2G,3G and so on and have seen the transformation ourselves while moving from one generation to another of mobile network connectivity. Let's try and understand if 5G is going to bring some real revolution as far as connectivity and internet landscape is concerned or is it just a passing upgrade? 5G is the next generation of mobile network that will eventually replace, or at least augment 4G LTE connection. With 5G not only the upload and download speed significantly increase but the latency or the time taken for the devices to interact with each other wit...

What is Hong Kong national security law and why China wants it during Corona-virus?

Image
China has been trying to get control over Hong Kong for some time now and with the pro democracy protests dying down due to the corona virus pandemic and focus of world media shifting from Hong Kong, China sees an opportunity to corner the city once and for all. China announced on Thursday to introduce Hong Kong national security law unilaterally, bypassing Hong Kong legislature. This is coming on the backdrop of a deadly pandemic which is threatening humanity worldwide. Hong Kong has already been under intense lockdown rules which prohibits assembly of more than few people and gathering of crowds etc. According to pro democracy campaigners this national security law is aimed at cracking down on dissent in Hong Kong. China seems to be digressing from the high level of autonomy and independent judiciary it granted Hong Kong when it took the city from UK in 1997. This "one country two systems" model was put in place for a period of 50 years. Pro democracy campaigners are ca...

How unemployment affects an economy?

Image
The driver of economy is consumption, which can be internal or external. Unemployment have a negative effect on both internal and external consumption. Not only does it choke demand but hampers supply as well. Not to mention, it changes psychology of the individuals and the nation to doom and gloom. After every economic expansion the subsequent contraction is almost inevitable. What goes up comes down. This theory fits perfectly into the boom and bust cycles of the economies. Even thought in the long run economies do go significantly high in their expansionary efforts but some checks and balances in the form of economic contraction are a fact. Below inforgraphic explains the relationship between a boom and bust cycle in the economy. It explains after every downturn a expansion is always seen. Where does this put us in the scenario of unemployment and how can we interrelate the boom and bust cycle with unemployment expansion and contraction? Let's try to understand in det...

Is 'Jio Platforms' benefiting from FOMO investing?

Image
This rush of marqee global investors for investing in Reliance's digital venture "Jio platforms" seems more like a case of FOMO (fear of missing out) investing. Make no mistake, getting global investing heavyweights to queue up for investing in your project, in this global recession is no mean feat. Not only does it restore India's credibility on the world map as a preferred FDI ( foreign direct investment) destination, but also reassures the world of the consumption story of the Indian household and it's future potential. Jio platforms is the digital arm of Reliance Industries, which is an Indian conglomerate and was until recently an oil heavyweight. It's owner and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani has been in constant race with Alibaba's Jack Ma as the richest Asian. Both of them have been exchanging places for Richest Asian position. It is quite bewildering to know, how an oil heavyweight company comes up with a digital venture with no prior expe...

Why TV News in India fell from grace?

Image
The descend of TV news has been one of the gravest concerns Indian democracy faces in today's times. An institution which was promoted as a pillar of democracy went rogue and is threatening to destroy the democracy itself. It is hell bent on burning every moral, ethical and professional obligation it has to the republic and its citizen, just to satisfy the powers that be.  In the last decade of the previous century, India saw the emergence of cable TV. Private TV channels and a spectrum of big & small media players flooded the market. Doordarshan made way for new and exciting alternatives and one of the most radical paradigm shifts was the coming about of 24/7 news channels. Along with the news channels, came the celebrity anchors who became household names breaking news to us every evening at prime time. Now let's discuss where things went wrong. Once you do a deep dive, you find the broken business model of TV news industry is to be blamed for this mess. TV news has...

How "Future of work" might look like, post the coronavirus pandemic?

Image
"The future is now". Work will be the way "it is now" since we have already pulled our future into the present, whether it is work, life or family. The debate is, what changes might stay on, after we are out of this pandemic? With much of humanity in some sort of lockdown it is safe to say some changes are here to stay. Humankind always had the ability to learn, accept, change and survive. We are faced with a life-threatening pandemic and we have to manoeuvre our way through it. While I remain optimistic, that we will get out of this, we all should start accepting this as a part of our life and learn to live with it. In other words, we will have to pivot to a new normal. Coronavirus pandemic has disrupted everything, claimed thousands of lives worldwide, put us under lockdown, played havoc with our mental health leading to depression and is threatening our livelihood in the form of a deep recession. While we are troubled by all those issues, one of the most i...

What is artificial intelligence and why it resembles an ideology?

Image
Since time immemorial, ideology have driven humanity in their quest for knowledge, power and dominance, while also pushing them into destruction, suffering and personal loss. Hope AI will not bring about the truth in this analogy. Humanity is on an overdrive to burden the world with its new toy, they call it Artificial Intelligence, AI for short. The new toy has shown promise, it is unique and has abilities never seen and heard before. It can think and make decisions like humans do. Wait...It can think like humans? Artificial intelligence i.e. AI is the computer simulation of human mind programmed into machines to think like humans and replicate their actions. This of course is the technical definition of artificial intelligence and corporations throughout the world are scrambling to enhance and deploy this piece of technology into everyday human lives. To better understand the vision behind this mind-boggling technology, we need to roll back to the early human existence. Humans ...

How can humanity achieve the utopia of equality and inclusion?

Image
The dream of a utopian society which reflects equality and inclusion has led to struggle between different ideologies and classes for far too long. While the struggle continues, the jury is still out if we are moving in the right direction to smash the walls of inequality and exclusion. Even though humanity evolved from animals, it developed a very unique quality among itself, the quality to distinguish individuals based on several denominations to create a differentiated society. One which categorizes people based on their social standing, skin colour, the work they did or the wealth they inherited. This society was divided broadly into two categories. The socially influential, wealthy, white people were called Elites and the others were further divided into slaves, servants, carpenters, plumbers etc, based on their skills and their place of origin. For convenience sake we will club this second category into commoners. The Elites, having access to all the wealth and influence use...

Why recession is a necessary evil?

Image
Recession brings a lot of pain and suffering, but if we think carefully, this pain and suffering is just a resetting of expectations in terms of lifestyle and never-ending quest for material well-being. In good times we seldom think about the ugly side of economy, but since nature has provided us this unique opportunity in our lifetime, blessing us with the coronavirus pandemic, in the worst year ever i.e. 2020 , it's time for us to take a quick peek into this economic dungeon and understand its ugly side i.e. the Recession. Is Recession really necessary or we can just do away with it once and for all? Most economic downturns are entirely man made, originating out of the greed of some influential people. The good news being, since recession is a man-made issue, it should be certainly avoided by proper response. To add to that, throughout human history, humankind experienced good times and bad times but never something as today's recession. Reason for this is the fact that...
